Thibault Milan, Innovation Director at Smile, shares key insights from the AI experience conference held during UX-Meet.
"Is AI going to replace UX designers?" The question lingered in the air as I stepped onto the stage at the AI Experience conference during UX-Meet. The room, packed with designers, developers, and innovators, was eager for answers. As the Innovation Director at Smile, I have personally witnessed the mix of anxiety and excitement that AI brings to our industry. But what I was about to share was not just another hype-driven narrative about AI—it was a practical roadmap for companies navigating the AI revolution, built from real-world experiments and occasional missteps.
My presentation, "How to Improve AI Adoption in Your Company," tackled these concerns head-on. Instead of making empty promises about AI’s capabilities, I shared proven strategies drawn from actual successes and failures. The energy in the room shifted as I revealed how careful experimentation, thoughtful data management, and strategic change leadership could transform AI from an imminent threat into a powerful ally. What followed was not just a presentation—it was a dynamic exchange of ideas with other innovators who shared their own stories of integrating AI, complete with both triumphs and challenges.
A gathering of innovators
The "UX-Meet: AI Experience" brought together 200 participants from diverse backgrounds—UX/UI experts, students from École 42, and IT professionals—all united by a shared curiosity about AI's role in transforming UX practices. The event provided an intimate setting where seasoned practitioners shared real-world experiences of integrating AI into their daily workflows. Rather than dwelling on theoretical possibilities, the speakers focused on practical applications, demonstrating how AI tools enhance their teams' capabilities without replacing human creativity and expertise.
A recurring theme throughout the presentations was the emphasis on human-centered design: AI as an assistant rather than a replacement. The speakers shared candid insights about their journey with AI adoption, from initial skepticism to discovering valuable use cases that amplify their teams' potential. The message was clear and reassuring: AI is not here to replace UX professionals but to augment their abilities, enabling them to focus on the uniquely human aspects of design—empathy, creativity, and strategic thinking.
The atmosphere buzzed with optimism as participants explored how AI could streamline routine tasks and unlock new possibilities for innovation in UX design. This was not just another technical conference; it was a gathering of professionals eager to embrace AI as a powerful ally in their creative processes while preserving the human touch that makes UX design truly impactful.
How to successfully adopt AI in your company ?
My presentation focused on the nuanced journey of AI adoption within organizations. Titled "How to Improve AI Adoption in Your Company," it emphasized the importance of a strategic and measured approach to integrating AI technologies. Drawing from my experience leading the "LLM4Dev" study at Smile—a six-month experimental initiative aimed at selecting and implementing AI tools for developers—I demonstrated how careful experimentation leads to tangible results. This pilot, now entering its deployment phase, has already shown measurable productivity gains for developers and provides clear indicators of return on investment.
A significant portion of the presentation was dedicated to the critical aspect of data management, leveraging Smile’s extensive experience in implementing AI tools across teams. Through numerous projects and initiatives, we have developed robust protocols for data sharing and confidentiality, which have become cornerstones of our AI strategy. I highlighted two key areas: first, the importance of thoroughly understanding the implications of sharing data with AI tools, and second, maintaining full transparency by regularly monitoring terms of service and usage policies. These essential practices ensure that our teams can harness AI’s capabilities while adhering to strict compliance standards and safeguarding sensitive information.
Finally, I addressed the vital role of change management in AI adoption. By fostering a culture of innovation and providing comprehensive training, organizations can empower their staff to effectively leverage AI tools. Smile’s own deployment experience illustrates how this approach enhances efficiency and aligns with strategic goals, paving the way for a successful integration of AI technologies.
Key points:
- Experimentation is essential: take the time to explore various AI tools through pilot phases without rushing decisions. This approach helps identify tools that truly add value and align with your company’s objectives.
- Start with the obvious: begin AI adoption with clear, simple use cases to gain traction and minimize barriers, even if the initial return on investment is modest.
- Data management: be vigilant about data confidentiality and thoroughly understand the terms of use for AI tools. Transparency with users and clients about data usage is critical.
- Change management: invest in upskilling and training employees to ensure a solid understanding of AI’s potential and limitations. This fosters a culture of innovation.
- Share and learn: engage in open discussions about your AI experiences to position your brand as a leader in innovation, facilitating valuable exchanges with peers.
- Think hollisticaly: look for AI solutions that deliver benefits across all levels of the organization. Integrate them into daily workflows to enhance efficiency.
