Board Bring-up, Drivers and Industrialization: Yocto at the service of High-Fidelity Audio

The need

A custom-designed architecture to ensure acoustic excellence

Our client, a global leader in digital signal processing as well as acoustic optimization and correction, stands out for its distinctive and highly integrated technological approach.

The use of a hybrid hardware architecture combining:

  • a proprietary platform (Intel/Linux), optimized for performance and system control
  • Xilinx's Zynq ARM architecture, an advanced chip integrating an ARM processor and a programmable FPGA on the same circuit, allows for a combination of software flexibility and real-time hardware acceleration.

As part of the evolution of its solutions towards audio over IP protocols (notably Dante), our client has undertaken the integration of new strategic technological building blocks:

  • the development of a critical hardware component, including the development of the low-level software layer (BSP) as well as the associated Software Development Kit (SDK).
  • the design of a custom Linux distribution, intended for development and production, integrating all the tools, dependencies and mechanisms necessary for managing complex audio streams on x86_64 architecture, while guaranteeing a high level of security, stability and industrial robustness.
The Challenge

From the electronic board to the hardened and secure OS

The main obstacle lay in the complexity of migrating low-level drivers to a new, custom-built electronic board. It wasn't simply a matter of running an operating system, but also of developing specific drivers for sensitive audio components, ensuring audio quality, and for bus controllers (CAN via SPI). Simultaneously, the system challenge was twofold: compilation via containers had to be industrialized to ensure reproducibility and production deployment, while simultaneously applying strict hardening to the Linux distribution to meet the cybersecurity requirements of a high-end product.

Our approach

The embedded "Full Stack" approach: From Linux Kernel to Docker

To solve this problem, we deployed a rigorous methodology based on the Yocto ecosystem and Kernel development:

  • Hardware bring-up: verification and validation tests of physical interfaces to ensure communication between components.
  • Kernel driver development: designing drivers for audio digital-to-analog converters communicating via I2C bus.
  • User-space driver development: creating drivers for the CAN controller via SPI.
  • OS construction (Yocto): integration and configuration of Yocto (Kirkstone version) for the Intel x86_64 architecture.
  • Securing (Hardening): strengthening the system security of the Linux distribution.
  • Industrialization: writing Dockerfiles to automate the compilation of the embedded image and ensure continuous integration (Gitlab CI).
The result

A secure, robust and automated software foundation

Our intervention enabled us to deliver a secure and operational Linux distribution, equipped with functional drivers for managing audio streams and card communications, all integrated into a fully automated Docker compilation chain.

On this type of project, success depends not only on the code, but also on the ability to understand the inner workings of the hardware. By moving from bringing up the board to hardening the OS via Yocto, we provided the client not just with software, but with a robust, industrial-grade foundation for their future audio products.
